Providenciales Sites
Many of the islands’ visitors spend a lot of time in Providenciales, and there are several great historical and cultural sites to visit:
- Ancient Lucayan Archaeological Site: Located near the western end of Long Bay, this ancient Lucayan archaeological site provides important insights into the island’s earliest known inhabitants.
- Rock Carvings at Sapodilla Hill: The remnants of messages from shipwrecked sailors can be found at Sapodilla Hill. Entry is free, and many visitors enjoy the stunning views from the top of the hill, as well as a glimpse into this bit of history.
- National Museum and Heritage Site: Visit the museum grounds for free and see the work in progress toward a more robust collection of cultural artifacts.
- Junkanoo Museum: Learn more about junkanoo, a percussive music genre popular on the islands. This two-room museum offers hands-on experiences with costumes and instruments that you can try out for yourself!
- La Famille Express Shipwreck Site: La Famille Express (or the Long Bay Shipwreck) can be viewed from the shore, but it is more often enjoyed during jet ski tours or cruises.

Middle Caicos Sites
If you’d like to explore a bit more of the island, rent a car for the day and take a trip to Middle Caicos. There, you’ll find even more historical sites.
- Conch Bar Caves: The most extensive dry cave system in the islands is open to tourists and offers a great opportunity for adventurous tourists to explore the caves with handheld flashlights.
- Haulover Plantation: A nod to the island’s brief history of cotton production, the Haulover Plantation site offers free access to tourists, allowing them to view the ruins of the field walls, a well, and the kitchen.
- Indian Cave: Easily accessible from the main road and with no entrance fee, Indian Cave is an excellent site for a quick stop. The caves feature many natural skylights and beautiful local plants.

North Caicos Sites
Add to your exploration with a ferry ride over to North Caicos, where you’ll be rewarded with more opportunities for historical exploration.
- Middle Caicos Co-Op: Featuring more than 30 artisans and their unique creations, the Middle Caicos Co-Op is a must-see for tourists looking for authentic souvenirs steeped in the island’s rich cultural heritage.
- Wade’s Green Plantation: Located about a six-minute drive from the ferry terminal, the Wade’s Green Plantation shows a glimpse of the island’s past. Established as a cotton plantation by the ousted British Loyalist Wade Stubbs, the current site offers pathways through the ruins with many labeled plaques along the way. Call ahead in order to schedule your tour with a government-approved guide.

Grand Turk and Salt Cay Sites
Those seeking even more adventure can opt to take a plane to either Grand Turk or Salt Cay. On Grand Cay, history buffs frequent the Grand Turk Lighthouse, H.M. Prison, and the Turks and Caicos National Museum. Those visiting Salt Cay may find themselves at Salt Cay Salinas, where they can see the best-preserved evidence of the island’s once-thriving salt industry.
